What is Analytical Creativity?

In short, Analytical Creativity is the method used durning "creative problem solving".

Imagine this scenario, you're met with an urge to redecorate your space so you turn to Pinterest for ideas. You find almost exactly what you're looking for but something's missing. About 90% of the elements are there, but the final 10% is nowhere to be found. Not having found what you were looking for, you decide that your current decorations will do. Nothing changes. You feel incomplete.

That's really not a fun way to start your day, but what else is there to do?

Well, this is where creative problem solving some into play!

Example 1. Decorating your Space - Visual Reference

Understanding the Elements

If you wanted to decorate your room in the aesthetic of the pictures saved, you first must identify the elements of the theme.

Reoccurring Colors:

• Pastel

• Pink

• Cream

• White

• Gold

Reoccurring Styles:

• Vintage 

• Parisian 

• Antique

• Thrifted

• Chic 

Recurring Elements:

• Dresser

• Bed

• Bedding

• Accent Furniture 

• Area Rugs

• Mirrors 

Now, since you understand what you're looking at, you can decide for yourself, which specific elements, and the style of elements, you want in your space.

For example, your list could look like:

• Vintage Pastel Dresser

• Gold Antique Mirror

• White Parisian Bedding

• Pastel Pink Vintage Rug

• Antique Accent Chair

• Flowy Cream Curtains

Additional Variables to Consider:

• The size of your room

• What to do with old furniture

• Transporting new furniture to room

• Budget for this project

Example 2. Building a Grazing Board for Halloween - Visual Reference

Understanding the Elements

We already have determined that the grazing board is for a halloween party so at least the theme is decided! Keep in mind that elements for different projects will have some variations.

Recurring Elements:

• Fruit

• Vegetable 

• Cheese

• Dried Fruit

• Cured Meats

• Nuts

• Garnish

Key Note:

• Recurring Vibe:

  • Spooky - Decor such as skeletons, spiders, coffins

  • Darker color palette - Purple, black, burgundy, blue, forest green

• Audience Variations:

  • Kids - If you're planning for a younger crowd, you may consider taking the pumpkin theme route. Leaning more into bright orange and purple colors and less overall spooky. Choosing food options that appeal to kids.

  • Adults - If you're planning for a more mature crowd, you may consider leaning all the way into spookiness. Procuring a coffin board and pairing the meats and cheeses with wine.

Now, since you understand what you're looking at, you can decide for yourself, which specific elements, and the style of elements, you need to procure and which ones you will forgo based on practical constraints.

Grocery List - The Basics

• Fruit

  • Red/ purple Grapes

  • Blackberries

• Dried Fruit

  • Raisins and/ or Dates

• Nuts

  • Chocolate covered almonds

  • Almonds

• Cheese/ Meats/ Crackers (Think about - texture, flavor, cracker pairing)

Additional Variables to Consider:

Example 3. Organizing Clothes and Accessories - Visual Reference

Understanding the Elements

For this project, we need to start by understanding our pain points in order to figure out what's needed vs desired.

Scenario: The closet in my room is filled with random items I'd like to keep out of the way so I have no space for clothes in there.

• Pain point = Clothes do not fit in the closet and are not well organized nor easily accessible

• Needed = Clothes to be well organized and easily accessible

• Desired = an "industrial" aesthetic

Recurring Elements/ Styles

• Use of black or silver metal

• Area for hanging and folded items

• Use of additional stands for shoes and jewelry

Key Questions to Answer:

• How many items do I need to be able to hang up at one time?

• How many drawers do I need available to utilize?

• Which accessories do I need to account for?

  • Do your sunglasses stay in your car or purse, or do you have a wide collection of them?

• How much space do you have in your room to work with?

  • Can you "build up", utilizing more vertical wall space?

    • **Determines installation options

Example List of items needed:

• Black metal clothing rack

  • Installation method: bolted to wall and floor for additional stability

  • Small silver metal side table for display of jewelry

    • Jewelry organizer

  • Basic silver metal wire shelving: for shoe storage

  • One small black dresser: for intimates and sweaters

    • Sunglass organizer to be displayed on top of this along with perfumes

  • Higher above black dresser: Installed silver wire grate/ grid to organize purses

Overview

Each circumstance comes with its own unique variables to consider. The more practice you have, the easier it will be to identify the variables that need to be taken into consideration.
